Grading Policy and Procedures

Grades are based on the following:

A 90 -100%

B 80 - 89%

C 70 - 79%

Unsatisfactory 69 or below

Below 70% is unsatisfactory and is considered a failing grade. If a student is showing signs of difficulty the instructor will counsel the student to determine what needs to be done to rectify the situation, and may arrange a test retake.

Academic probation occurs when a student scores below 70% on two tests. A student on academic probation is required to arrange tutoring. The administration will assist finding appropriate tutoring. The costs of tutoring and test re-takes will be the responsibility of the student. The student may be required to re-take the failed exam within one week and will remain on probation until a passing grade is maintained consistently.

Dismissal: If the student fails a total of 4 tests, original or re-take, the student is dismissed from the program. The student may re-enter the program during the next term.

Incomplete: Any student given an "incomplete" will be required to hand in any missing work. No final exam will be given to a student with incomplete work. All "incompletes" must be completed in full within three (3) months of the classes’ final meeting or the entire class must be repeated at full cost to the student. All re-takes of exams and quizzes must be taken on student’s own time and arranged with a staff member.

There is no transfer credit from other institutions. Fox Valley School of Massage does not grant advanced standing for previous training or course work.

All students will be given a final comprehensive exam as determined by the instructors.

The school maintains files of the student’s tests and papers for a period of five years.

Progress Reports

Students will receive progress reports throughout the term. Reports will include results of exams, assignments, and attendance. If the student wishes a review at other times, he/she may make an appointment during school office hours with the administrator.

Students will receive a progress report one week prior to the final exam. Students will be informed of their average scores, attendance and given feedback on clinical performance.

Additionally, the skeletal and muscular systems will be taught as a hands-on experience through a wide variety of teaching methods.

Massage Theory & Application

As students learn the routine, they will also be taught how to take a verbal intake as well as proper communication skills with clients. This course will have both lecture material and interactive, hands on learning time. Anatomy is the study of the structures of the human body while Kinesiology is the study of the movement of the human body. This course will involve an in depth study of the human musculoskeletal system as it pertains to the movement of the body and its parts. This class is taught as a lecture course as well as a hands-on course involving the students by tracing muscles as well as sculpting the muscles.

Medical Terminology

Medical Terminology is the language of science and medicine. Professionals who use anatomy and physiology need to have a standard terminology in order to communicate clearly and effectively. Medical Terminology is also the understanding of how words are formed in order to understand the definitions associated with each word.

Pathology

Students will study how disease affects the human body and what impacts can be made with massage. Students will learn how to discern whether a massage is indicated or contraindicated. If the pathological disorder is contraindicated, the students will learn how to determine what other health care professionals should be consulted to help the client.

Health History Forms

Health History Forms and SOAP Charting skills are imperative to Massage Therapists. Health History forms help massage therapists gain an understanding of the client’s health and needs. They provide the necessary information to aid the therapist in determining whether the massage is indicated or contraindicated as well the main problem / concern of the client for that appointment.

SOAP Charting

SOAP charting enables the massage therapist to keep an accurate record of the client’s response to massage by utilizing a universal system that incorporates both what the client tells the therapist and what the therapist may notice / palpate while working with the client. SOAP charting allows therapists to keep important information organized and clearly documented for each client and it is the tool we use to communicate with other health care practitioners.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is an introduction to utilizing water as a source for increasing the body’s natural ability to recover from overuse or injury. This course teaches the students when it is appropriate to use ice, heat, sauna, steam, hot / cold showers and paraffin treatments.

Ethics & Communicable Diseases

This course will assist students in understanding the laws, rules, regulations, limitations and obligations concerning massage therapy. It will provide an opportunity and guidance in establishing a code of ethics as a massage professional. It will outline the acceptable behaviors and practices. This course will define professional hygiene and health habits for massage therapists.

In addition students will explore and define the personal and professional definitions for Ethical Practices, Confidentiality and Integrity.

Nutrition

This course emphasizes not only the importance of good nutrition for the massage therapist, but also the importance of healthy food sources and food purity.

Reflexology

Students will be introduced to the basic technique of Reflexology and understand its theory that direct pressure applied to specific areas on the feet stimulates corresponding areas in other parts of the body. Students will also learn by hands on the techniques used to apply pressure to the feet such as thumb walking, finger walking, and hook and backup.

Aromatherapy

In this course students will learn how to use essential oils and carrier oils. They will learn how the oils can affect the mind and the body. They will learn the difference between natural and synthetic oils, the benefits of aromatherapy and how to use it in a massage practice.

Polarity Therapy

Students will be introduced to a systematic routine, involving touching rather than stroking. Using polarity, the therapist would either rest both hands in specific places, rock the body, or rhythmically press at various depths.

CPR / First-Aide

Each student needs to complete training in Adult CPR and standard first-aide.

Business and Professional Practice

Students will learn how to develop a business plan, market themselves and their profession, types of marketing strategies available, and which area is most beneficial for them to use in their practice. Additionally, there is an accounting lecture in which students will learn what receipts to keep, what is tax deductible, and what they will need to claim for their yearly taxes. Students will learn the ins and outs of taxes for the massage therapist.

Reiki

In this overview the students will be shown how Reiki is taught, learned, and practiced. There will also be a demonstration of a Reiki treatment to observe what takes place during a Reiki session.

Additional Costs:  Massage Tables / Additional Study Materials / After Graduation Fees:

Massage tables will be provided during class time. As class progresses and students become acquainted with the different tables, the school will place a student order for the tables. Staff members will assist the students in choosing a table that is appropriate for the student.

Upon graduation students are required to sit for the National Certification Exam before they can register with the State of Wisconsin. Exam fees are set by each organization. Students should budget for $225.00 for the National Certification exam and $115.00 for State Registration.
